Icknield and Wattstor Partnership: Locally Produced Renewable Energy with Price Protect – Combining Flexibility and Cost Stability

Icknield Price Protect Project

About Icknield Gas Limited

Icknield Gas Limited operates a biomethane-to-grid facility. Based in South Oxfordshire, the company owns and manages the Icknield Farm anaerobic digestion (AD) plant. It is one of the first ten sites in the UK to inject biomethane directly into the national gas grid.

The plant upgrades raw biogas into high-quality biomethane using advanced filters and safely adds it to the local gas network. It uses a portion onsite to meet around 65 per cent of its own electricity needs.

About the partnership

Icknield Gas Limited and Wattstor have entered into a long-term electricity supply agreement. They are using Wattstor’s pioneering Price Protect model — a renewable energy tariff that offers both flexibility and cost certainty.

Price Protect reduces Icknield’s electricity rates when market prices fall, and caps them when they rise. This shields the business from price spikes whilst supplying locally generated renewable energy.

The partnership will significantly reduce the Icknield plant’s consumption of grid electricity with the deployment of a Wattstor 1.2 MW solar array enhanced with battery storage. Once operational, the solar project is expected to replace approximately 70 per cent of the site’s previous grid electricity consumption. On-site renewable generation will then supply 90 per cent of Icknield’s power requirements — a major milestone on the path to net zero.
